erap favors legalization of jueteng – why are we not surprised?

many things surprise us about erap estrada. the latest and most disturbing is that erap

erap and jueteng

is figuring out as one of the top 5 in the polls for presidentiables , at one point coming in as a strong second.

the other goes back a few years where erap was actually convicted by the court as guilty of the crime of plunder. we were surprised, pleasantly this time, that he was actually convicted. the philippines has the distinction of having a former president convicted to stealing money from his own government.

the other surprise was president gloria macapagal arroyo granted erap, actually offered erap a presidential pardon for his crime. erap did not seek it, he did not want but arroyo almost immediately offered it to him. okay, that surprise is not with erap, it is with arroyo.

but this one – among five presidentiables he is the only one who favors legalizing jueteng in the country, does not surprise us at all.

jueteng is very important in the life of erap. we knew that from the hearings of the plunder case that convicted erap of  the crime. what else is erap to say?

jueteng legalized will mean erap might not find the need to buy a lot of luggage.

MANILA, Philippines—Of five presidential aspirants who spoke Tuesday on how they intended to address poverty, only Joseph Estrada said “jueteng” should be legalized.

The ousted President said millions of families were benefiting from the illegal numbers game and that he favored legalizing it “until the time we find alternative jobs for our people.”

“I am not tolerating it but I am for the legalization of jueteng,” said Estrada, who was convicted of plunder in 2007 for accepting jueteng kickbacks but was quickly pardoned by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
