eddie villanueva’s confused & ill-advised yellow tv bus dance musical ad, i think

first time i saw this ad, my reaction was – good heavens, noynoy aquino is airing a baduy tv ad – there was so much yellow in the ad, it had a song, choreography. i was freaking out as i was watching the tv ad and did not understand why the noynoy campaign decided to air a tv ad as bad as this one coming from the first one they aired which was very much well-received.

towards the middle of the ad, i was shocked – it was an ad for eddie villanueva. i had to laugh very loud when i realized it was a villanueva ad.

and that is where the problem of this ad starts. it’s a very unlikely tv ad for a very unlikely presidentiable behind an unlikely strategy. nothing in the ad worked and more specially nothing in the ad made sense.

first off, the use of too much yellow does not help villanueva at all. in fact i think the over-use of yellow is counter productive to villanueva as that color is mostly associated with cory and now noynoy aquino’s campaign. i understand this has been villanueva’s color from the previous campaign, but he should have used it much less in this tv ad as it is not helping him at all.

i do not understand why this ad for villanueva needed to target the youth.  the key elements of ads that are meant for the young audience are there – the song, rap and the dance steps.

does the villanueva campaign think  the young voters are  the demographics group that will get villanueva elected? or do they think that it is this demographics that is posing a problem for villanueva?

we understand that the ad has people in it of all ages and from all walks of life, but the over-all feel and tone of the ad, the singing, the rap and the dance steps paints it an overwhelming targeting of the young.

audience targeting is one of the top 3 most important components in any advertising. miss that one and everything else you do is useless and will not make sense.

putting the issue of audience targeting aside, there is the question of fitness to the candidate. this kind of ad does not, not even in a million years match the persona of villanueva. it could have been a great fit to escudero who himself is young and purposely target  young voters, but not for villanueva. doing this for villanueva loses credibility on his side.

there are other small things that bother us. “sakay na sa bus ni bro” as a double meaning of bro. eddie and “bro” the slang term for jesus. i think it’s use, even if double meaning smacks of being too presumptuous on the part of eddie villanueva. he is alluding himself as Christ?

towards the end of the ad, there is a sign that says “welcome to to Barangay Bagong Pilipinas”. i think they should have just removed the word “barangay” from that sign and it would worked was well and makes it more consistent with what he is trying to do – run for the presidency of the country and not just  a “barangay”.

there are a few more things — there was a short clip of villanueva dancing, that was very disturbing. and the last, at the end of the ad, villanueva talks to the camera in a tone that i thought was trying to be hard to be cute that he sounded gay.

on the whole, this ad i think is a very confused ad. many things in the ad were  not working well together and many did not match the persona of villannueva. not to mention, it is very confused on target audience.

i think villanueva got vary bad advise from the advertising agency he hired for this ad. this is a WAWAM!  (What A Waste Of Advertising Money!).

This is such an amateur video. Kung sino ang nagdirect nito needs to go back to school. Sino ba ang kumakandidato si Eddie or yung singer. Half of the time it was focus on the singer for the whole 2 minutes of the commercial. I got tired of waiting who is the candidate. Ha ha ha…

for those people who think they are confused and disturbed about the ads of Bro Eddie, I do respect your opinion… When you are not in favor of the person, it is very easy to point out the mistakes of others. Your comments are most welcome…it really shows that you are disturbed and confused…we can help you with that!!!

i certainly do not agree with you. that was a good video right there. no need for tactics or entertainment, just plain platform and vision. after all, we are not voting for an entertainer, we are voting for a leader that will lead us out of the shame, darkness and crises we are in..

and i certainly do not agree with you about villuaneva losing his credibility for targeting the youth. come on, is politics just mere image and reputation? he targets the youth because i believe he believes in the youth. he knows that the youth have a huge role to play in this generation. just that, no marketing strategies or whatsoever.

and lastly, i would just like to say: LET US NOT DWELL ON THE PAST. who says yellow belongs only to the aquinos?.. the past has happened, it can never happen again.

the irony of it is with the use of music, rap and the dance, this ad is meant to entertain. in fact the other weakness of this as is it tries too hard to entertain that you hardly get the platform and vision that villanueva wants to communicate. the vision and platform all get lost in the singing, dancing and the rap.

like i said it is really a very confused ad.

      • December 17, 2009 at 8:40 am

I know you’re confused…. we’re not. If you can’t see his platform from the ad, i’m sorry to say but you are really confused.. The ad is so simple my 2 year old daughter can understand and comprehend it.

        • December 17, 2009 at 9:24 am

if you’re 2 year old daughter understands and comprehends the tv ad, then the point i am making is confirmed – this ad is just meant to entertain with the singing, the rap and most specially the dancing. your 2 year old daughter most probably thinks eddie villanueva is a new rap singing artist and probably thinks he is the guy doing the rap. she will probably remember the dance moves but i don’t think your daughter will be able to play back or even give a hint on villanueva’s platform as most were shown on supers at a very super fast speed, not to mention your 2 year old daughter might not be able to read words yet.

it’s either that or your 2 year old daughter thinks its an ad for junk food or for candies for kids. these products use singing, rap and dancing in their ads.

that is exactly one of the points i am making.

Ano nangyari?????

The lyrics of Bro. Eddie Villanueva’s music video convey a very clear message: that change starts from the individual. Has anyone who commented negatively on the ad really paid any attention to what it says? Or is it just their mouth running?

        • December 31, 2009 at 1:31 pm

that is not very clear in the ad. that was hardly dramatized in the ad. the dancing and singing are just too distracting. there are also many other messages in the ad, but all of them are lost in the dancing ang singing.

compare that for example to the ads of teodoro, gordon, aquino and villar. their ads have very clear messages. it’s impossible for you to miss the messages in the ads of these 4 presidentiables.

  5. December 17, 2009 at 1:32 am

the ad is certainly not ‘baduy’ to me because i do not go ‘baduy’ on brother eddie, or on gloc 9 and the number of people who appeared on it, for that matter.

i understand this blog’s theme focuses on the analysis of the candidates’ use of philippine marketing and advertising in their respective campaign strategy. nevertheless, this factor is just ONE on our criteria list. we do not choose a leader merely by his or her entertainment value. kenny was right, we are not voting entertainers in 2010.

what i do not understand is why should i (now i am just speaking for myself) be bothered by the little details on the ad, facts they may be, as they will not have lasting impact on my life, my generation’s, this country’s, and our future. there are better agenda to talk about here, like the vision and heart, or the lack thereof, of each candidate for our nation.

lastly, yellow is for courage. (with all due respect,)it is not just for cory.

villanueva is a public figure and all public figures take a persona based on their public appearances. villanueva’s persona is that of a religious leader who has his feet firmly planted on earth who knows very well the plight of the people. i see him as a very practical and earth bound reformer who talks more of people’s well-being on earth rather than people’s well-being on heaven.

this ad does not at all portray him as such. this ad makes villanueva look superficial and definitely, very strongly trying hard. the unfortunate targeting of the youth also makes him look very fake.

    Shadee :

lastly, yellow is for courage. (with all due respect,)it is not just for cory.

yellow is also for sunshine. it is also for urine. yellow can mean many things. BUT in the world of politics and nation-building in the philippine, yellow is cory aquino, the protest color for the assassination of ninoy aquino and her struggle for democracy in the country. it is now about noynoy aquino and his campaign.

villanueva taking on this color will not help him any. the fact is EVERYTIME people see yellow, they will THINK and BE REMINDED of cory and noynoy. every time people see yellow in villanueva, people will get reminded of villabueva’s opponent, noynoy aquino.

it is a fact that cannot be helped nor avoided. like i said its use is only counter-productive for villanueva.

this ad is of extreme importance to the villanueva campaign. tv advertising in political campaigns as in mass consumer marketing makes or breaks candidates and brands. this ad is villanueva’s most important and biggest effort to level the playing field, to equalize and effectively compete with other presidentiables who have more money and much bigger organizations than he has.

villanueva is at the bottom of the surveys, 1% at most, he has to get to 59% to beat aquino. this ad is the main vehicle to get him there. he does not have the funds like villar has, so anything he does now, specially in ads must be a sure fire hit.

this one is not. it’s a WAWAM!

if he’s at the bottom, then why is he number one in this blog’s survey? 🙂

and yes, eddie villanueva doesn’t have the funds but he sure has a lot of supporters who would fund him. A LOT.. for one, i know of a person that donated 1 Million to him last 2004.. and that person is more than willing to donate again. he will be provided. someone has said this: if you have a vision, you will have provision. and i think that is what’s going to happen to bro. eddie..

and if you haven’t noticed yet, he goes to schools, universities and youth organizations to talk, to explain, to educate, to make us realize things.. he has been to our organization last month and he got a very great response.. and he has been to our school too (UP diliman) last month, and everyone who went there really had a change of perspective about him (including him) and oh, he’s also distributing dvds.. the point is, hindi lang tv ads ang armas ni bro. eddie sa pagcacampaign.. and in fact, i dont think he will be depending much on it.. 🙂

Why you should stop complaining about another candidate’s ad and start scrutinizing your candidate instead:

    1. Noynoy would not be running for president if the late Pres. Cory Aquino did not pass away. Doesn’t this suggest that more than the intent to help the country, he simply went with the popularity this incident brought up?

    2. Others say that the state and the church must be separate. This is the main reason why many hesitate to vote for Eddie Villanueva. But, if this issue ever “applies” for Sir Villanueva, the same goes for Noynoy Aquino, the fact that he withdrew his support on the RH bill JUST BECAUSE THE CHURCH IS ALSO AGAINST IT AND WOULD WITHDRAW ITS SUPPORT ON HIM IF HE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE BILL. Doesn’t this mean the church would have control over the state if ever he wins?

    3. Also, this withdrawal of support on the RH bill tells us that this candidate is not after the good of the Filipinos but his own gains which is to win the election and to get whatever perks you get for being the president. Think about it, KUNG NGAYON PALANG SUNUDSUNURAN NA SIYA, PAANO PA KAPAG NAUPO SIYA? And for what? For the good of the country? No.

Well, I’m not saying these to elevate the name of Sir Villanueva. The thing is, sabi nga, bago mo pintasan ang dungis ng iyong kapwa, pahirin mo muna ang dungis sa iyong mukha. Okay? Try to be open, it won’t hurt.

I have this orgmate who claims to be a hater of a certain group but posts its page all over the net. What a hater! Oh well, sabi nga the more you hate the more you love. And by the way, please don’t go telling yellowbells to change their color (or to not excessively use the color yellow) just because they might be confused for sun flowers. And, those you call “people”–it’s amazing that you know how they think, what they would remember if they see this or that. If you continue generalizing Filipinos, it’s like saying everyone uses Filipino as their mother tongue.

  14. December 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm

    Interesting read.

Personally, when I first saw the ad, it immediately brought a smile to my face, simply because I’m one of the people who would want to say, “Eddie Ako!”

I do share your sentiments about the overuse of yellow. I was hoping that the Bangon Pilipinas campaign team would revert more towards using green rather than yellow ever since the whole Noynoy campaign came about. But it is what it is.

You also do have a point about the Barangay Bagong Pilipinas thing, but I don’t see it is a big deal.

If the target demographic is the youth, I don’t see why that’s a problem. If I’m not mistaken, this is one of the first ads that came out for Bro. Eddie. Maybe the following ones (if there are any) would target a different demographic.

I’m no expert in advertising, but as an individual with an opinion, I liked the ad overall. 🙂

It is funny to think that people argue here in this site just because of the color or ad of the candidate, wherein the most important thing to be aware of as a voyer is to see and observe the life of the candidates. They all look OA all of them including noynoy but that is not the problem….because the bottomline is how they live as a true leader. A leader that has a self-control towards all vices…And the only one who has it is EDDIE VILLANUEVA.

The AD with its yellow color captures not just the youth but I think to all Pilipinos as a whole. It describes the brilliance of a new day. Also, I am carried by the support of every individual who participated in the AD, ENRICHING OUR VISION of a NEW PHILIPPINES, especially in supporting the cause of the BANGON BAGONG PILIPINAS PARTY. The youth, the content of the music, the background and the over-all message I think in my own opinion speaks that “Victory can only be achieved, when we are united TO THE GREAT CAUSE”. Everyone who participated exhibited a clear view of what we Pilipinos are yearning for “CHANGE” like the DAWNING OF A NEW DAY, AFTER WE PASS THROUGH THE TURMOIL OF THE NIGHT. GOD BLESS BANGON BAGONG PILIPINAS PARTY. LET US CONTINUE TO SUPPORT BRO. EDDIE FOR PRESIDENT.

Magkaisa po tayo at manalangin at makikita natin ang bagong umaga para ating lahat. that is what all supporters of presidentiables who lose in polls say.

My 11 years old son uttered after watching, “It’s cool!”. I dont know to those who are commenting negatively. But my son is not bias. He just like it. And i like it too, it is full of sense and symbolizes alot, if you know how to interprete it.

Well sorry to say, but many of my friends extremely liked Bro. Eddie’s Ad, they even texted me they’r considering voting him already just because of the ad, that was last week, this week, many of them are already convinced of Bro. Eddie’s capabilities, character, and competence. May God Bless Bro. Eddie…we support you!!! May God truly bless this nation!!!

There’s a drastic difference between blown away by a geniusly-produced advertisment and deciding the future leaders of the nation. Ads alone do not help.

    • December 22, 2009 at 10:23 am

you have a point that hindi dapat pagbasehan ang tv ads ng nangangampanya coz it is just a front act..kind of looking good but…i dont thik so…!?! pero ky bro. eddie, i know that it is not just a front act..if kung nag.tv ad man xa its bcoz yung mga makakalaban nya eh june pa nga lng yata may tv ads na..xa pa kaya..bakit sila lng ba ang marunong ng ganun? ofcourse not..kung may difference man, ito yung sincerity and honesty ni bro.eddie that is much higher & already proven long before he decided to run for president last 2004…

      • December 22, 2009 at 10:33 am

villanueva’s “sincerity and honesty” was not depicted and not shown in that ad, his dancing skills were. well, a little bit of it.

        >>ofcourse not..kung may difference man, ito yung sincerity and honesty ni bro.eddie that is much higher & already proven long before he decided to run for president last 2004…

Sincerity and honesty? Yan ang traits ni Eddie Villanueva?

They’re not enough traits for running a country. Especially when there are others that has it too and has much more to offer.

  35. private
    December 22, 2009 at 12:37 pm

there’s nothing wrong with the ads the message is clear. you really cant please stupid ppl if you know what i mean?

  36. December 22, 2009 at 5:03 pm

even if his sincerity & honesty was not seen in the TV ad..still it was proven..and there’s no question about it…still bro.Eddie is a sincere, honest & God fearing person…

and one more thing, wala bang right si bro.Eddie na magsayaw? I dont think so…!

    Go Bro. Eddie..!

    • O_O
      December 23, 2009 at 3:46 am

      >>even if his sincerity & honesty was not seen in the TV ad..still it was proven..

Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to have a clear vision for the country either. Once he does the so-called change, what’s next? Hanggang “honesty and goodness” lang ba kaya ni Eddie? Because that’s what it seems with that commercial.

And they’re not the core traits needed for running a country. It’s simply insufficient. Why?

how about this, try to ask the youth on the streets, if they’ve heard bro.eddie’s tv ad, what would they say? compare to noynoy and villar. probably they will say “eddie ako”

        • February 7, 2010 at 8:20 pm

if they promise the same thing, then they are saying the same things. villanueva will not win this election if he is saying the saying things as the others. villanueva has a built in disadvantage – he is relatively unknown compared to the others. people will tend to believe and vote the more popular candidates if they are just saying the same things.

          • U.P.
            February 7, 2010 at 9:14 pm

So, there is no problem with villanueva.. . the problem is on the people on what side they will choose to be the basis of there choice, on what criteria and on what level of intelligence. Many People, many Filipinos and I think most of us, are IGNORANT about political matters… VILLANUEVA is like a silent GIANT- unkown, unpopular and based on several surveys, he ranks always at the back of the raw,BUT HE IS THE MAN WHO WILL REALLY PUT THE PHILIPPINES INTO VICTORY!!!

            • February 8, 2010 at 1:24 pm

follow up comment pala dun sa nagreact dun sa “BRO”….maling mali na parang substitute name ni Lord Jesus Christ ay bro lang! nowhere in the bible that you should call Him like that. What a blasphemy! He is God! Lord. YWH. He can be like a brother to us but never to tag Him as bro. dahil dito nawawala na sa tamang direksyon ang pagbibigay ng reverence kay Lord.

The message of the ad is clear across all dialect, because the theme of the ad is who can change this county? ‘Eh di ako!’ – you and me. I think that was clear, obviously the critic wants only the artistry of it and not connect it with the message.

The caption underneath the blog’s title (2010 Presidentiables Blog) is “How to Win Philippine Elections with Philippine ADVERTISING and Philippine MARKETING.” (emphasis added).

I don’t see anything wrong with wawam’s post. It’s clearly consistent with the thrust of this blog. Wawam is clearly alluding to Bro. Eddie’s TV ad, not Bro. Eddie himself. It’s so obvious, I don’t know what the whole fuss is all about! Bro. Eddie’s followers should not have to feel defensive just because someone did not like Bro. Eddie’s ad. That’s it. I think everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and what’s needed for a genuine democracy to work is for everyone to RESPECT each other. Now, if you don’t agree with someone, then you can respectfully disagree without lambasting the person’s character (which has nothing to do with a person’s presidential preference… so what if someone isn’t for Bro. Eddie? Does that mean the person’s evil? or hindering God’s plan? That reeks of narrow-mindedness. Even Paul and Peter had their disagreements.)

For all you Bro. Eddie supporters, I actually APPLAUD your enthusiasm and passion for Bro. Eddie. I see that you are very committed to his cause, and you really believe in what he stands for and in what he can do. I admire that. If he does win, he can count on at least a portion of the population to readily unite under his banner. So instead of feeling overly defensive if someone doesn’t like Bro. Eddie or his ad (this isn’t ALL his supporters… I’ve read some posts too from Bro. Eddie’s supporters that are open-minded and charitable), let’s try to at least give civility and intelligent dialogue a chance.

      February 15, 2010 at 12:06 pm

      @Mon

There is a difference between being an enthusiastic supporter, and being a raving fanatic. Given the bulk of the comments I’ve heard from Eddie’s supporters here, it’s pretty easy to see under which category most of them fall under.

*Hint: It’s not the one worthy of praise 😦

Well, I’m still rather inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. But then again, I’m new here! Plenty of time for me to get acquainted with the lot of them! 🙂

Although I must admit that I did read quite a number of posts that were more than enough to make me cringe… 😦

Hi rish! Happy to know na may sumasang-ayon sa unang post ko. I have nothing against Bro. Eddie supporters, just like I hope Bro. Eddie supporters have nothing against non-supporters like me.

So… if you know anything about Bro. Eddie’s planned programs (the more specific, the better), bakit hindi ninyo i-share? 🙂

to all those who got disturbed by bro eddie’s use of yellow… ang totoo nyan, it was used for ninoy as we, filipino people, welcome him home, from a song that says,”tie a yellow ribbon…” i’m sorry but even cory does have anything to do with it!!! but for noynoy? what does yellow mean for him, lam nyo ba? ako, di ko alam bakit nakiki-yellow siya! but for BANGON, it means sunrise for the Philippines kung bibigyan lang po natin ng chance ang grupo ni Bro EDDIE to lead our nation.yellow thing is not the issue here! wag na nating palakihin, may maipuna lang!

just think about it: bakit po ba tila takot tayo na pangunahan ng isang may GENUINE FEAR OF GOD? EDDIE NGAYON N!

I don’t it’s a matter of them not being God-fearing. Why do you think they spend so much time pandering to religious groups and the CBCP.

I do now want a god-fearing candidate – somebody who will act out of fear – I would rather have somebody who does what he does as a simple matter of civic duty and professionalism. Now that would be genuine passion for the nation.

Regarding the use of yellow, I think the issue here is not what it stands for but which presidentiable would be able to market the use of yellow. For Noynoy, even if we say that yellow has no inherent meaning for him and his platform, it’s still suitable because he is an Aquino and he is Cory’s son. So, yeah, when you see yellow, you automatically think of Cory and, by extension, because of the presidential race, Noynoy.

As for the use of yellow to mean “BANGON,” oo nga, pwede naman siguro. So yes, I agree that for a lot of viewers, the excessive use of yellow in the ad could be confusing and it might not generate the kind of effect the advertisers were hoping for.

actually its not yellow… it’s a golden yellow color that stands for the colors of the sun’s rays. It’s not about the ad, it’s about the content.

    EDDIE AKO 2010… BANGON PILIPINAS!
