First Quarter 2011 Social Weather Survey:
Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Ninoy Aquino
are top three most identified Filipino heroes

Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Ninoy Aquino are the top three most mentioned persons considered to be genuine Filipino heroes, according to the First Quarter 2011 Social Weather Survey, conducted from March 4-7, 2011.
The survey question was, “Sino-sino po ang mga taong kinikilala ninyong tunay na bayaning Pilipino? Maaari po kayong magbanggit ng hanggang limang tao.” [“Who are the persons whom you consider a genuine Filipino hero? You can name at up to five persons.”]
To that, 75% named Jose Rizal, 34% named Andres Bonifacio, and 20% named Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. [Table 1].
They were followed by Cory Aquino (14%), Apolinario Mabini (14%), Emilio Aguinaldo (11%), Ferdinand Marcos (5.1%), Ramon Magsaysay (4.3%), Manuel L. Quezon (3.8%), and Lapu-Lapu (3.7%).
No list of names were provided to prompt the respondents.
Following the top ten were Melchora Aquino (3.2%), Marcelo H. Del Pilar (3.0%), Noynoy Aquino (2.9%), Emilio Jacinto (2.8%), Manny Pacquiao (2.6%), Gabriela Silang (2.6%), Gregorio Del Pilar (2.2%), Juan Luna (1.9%), Manuel Roxas (1.8%), Joseph Estrada (1.8%), Diosdado Macapagal (1.6%), and Fernando Poe Jr. (1.6%).
Fifteen percent consist of names obtaining less than 1.5% of responses, 3% had no one in mind, and another 3% did not give answer.
Area and class patterns
Majorities in all areas named Jose Rizal as the person considered to be a genuine Filipino hero: 79% in Balance Luzon, 79% in the Visayas, 74% in Metro Manila, and 68% in Mindanao [Table 2].
Andres Bonifacio consistently followed at second place with 47% in Metro Manila, 35% in the Visayas, 34% in Balance Luzon, and 25% in Mindanao.
Benigno Aquino Jr. was third most cited in Metro Manila (33%), Visayas (20%), and Balance Luzon (18%), while Cory Aquino was third most cited in Mindanao (19%).
Jose Rizal was also the most cited person considered to be a genuine hero Filipino in all classes: 79% in class E, 75% in class D or the masa, and 70% in class ABC.
Andres Bonifacio and Benigno Aquino Jr. were equally the second most mentioned persons in class ABC, both obtaining 23%, while Andres Bonifacio was second most cited in class D (35%) and class E (32%).
Benigno Aquino Jr. was third most cited in class D (22%) and class E (12%), while Apolinario Mabini was third most cited in class ABC (20%).
The March 2011 Social Weather Survey was conducted from March 4-7, 2011 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults in Metro Manila, the Balance of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao (sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, ±6% for area percentages).
The area estimates were weighted by National Statistics Office medium-population projections for 2011 to obtain the national estimates.
