serial plagiarist Senator Tito Sotto plagiarizes AGAIN in his september 5 speech, this time robert f. kennedy #rhbill

this just exploded once again on twitter just a few hours after senator sotto delivered his 4th and last privilege speech at the senate floor just today. apparently senator sotto, the hero plagiarist of the anti rh bill advocates and the serial plagiarist in the philippine senate  did it AGAIN today. this time he plagiarized the last part of his speech from a speech by the great Robert F. Kennedy, “Day of Affirmation Address” speech delivered on june 6, 1966.

abs-cbn’s TV Patrol reported tonight that senator said the english parts were just “texted to him by a friend”. also of interest was his answer to senator jinggoy estrada’s question to him if there was any part of his speech was plagiarized. sotto replied there was none and the way he made sure of that was he delivered the speech in filipino.

of course he lied. his speech did contain plagiarized parts.

sotto also probably thinks translating it to filipino is not plagiarim.

here is the side by side comparison of the speeches we got from here : https://twitter.com/ChiliMedley/status/243281155581935618

the above pic was posted by Michel Eldiy (@ChiliMedley)

the plagiarized parts of the kennedy speech is on paragraph #34 (at around the last 1/4 of the speech; the paragraph starts with:  “Give me a place to stand,” said Archimedes….” ) of the kennedy speech while sotto said them on the second to the last paragraph of his speech (last paragraph is “Maraming salamat po.”)

PDI article, september 6:

Sotto does it again, channels Robert F. Kennedy in Filipino

 By

Did Robert F. Kennedy know how to speak Filipino?

This appears to be the gist of Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III’s defense amid new allegations of plagiarism after he delivered the fourth and last part of his “turno en contra” speech against the reproductive health bill.

It took bloggers less than two hours to find out that Sotto did it again.

A tweet from a certain Michel Eldiy at 5:30 p.m., more than an hour after the Sotto speech, triggered online discussions on the supposed intellectual dishonesty of the senator.

“Not true that last part of Sotto’s speech is original. See Day of Affirmation speech of Robert Kennedy in 1966 in South Africa,” said Eldiy, who goes by the Twitter handle, “ChiliMedley.”

She then tweeted a link to the Kennedy speech and later compared it with the speech of Sotto.

Sought for comment, the senator said: “It was texted to me by a friend.

“I found the idea good. I translated it into Tagalog [Filipino]. So what’s the problem?” Sotto told the Philippine Daily Inquirer when asked about his reaction to the fresh accusations.

“Ano? Marunong nang mag-Tagalog si Kennedy? (What now? Does Kennedy now know how to speak in Tagalog)?” he added.

In a separate text message, the senator lamented that proponents of the RH bill were nitpicking

Sotto’s last speech copied from Kennedy?

by Jojo Malig, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines –  Did Senator Tito Sotto, who has been accused of plagiarism, copy yet again from someone else in the last part of his “turno en contra” privilege speech against the reproductive health (RH) bill on Wednesday?

Social media users called out Sotto anew, accusing him of only translating parts of a speech originally delivered by the late US Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Some of the contentious lines of the speech are:
Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

    berna quiros :

Sen.Sotto is not a plagiarist! So, nagtatagalog na ngayon si Kennedy?

it is the exact same thing, just translated into filipino. translate that back to english and you will get exactly the kennedy speech. sotto once again did not give the proper attribution. it is plagiarism.

this is not the first time sotto plagiarized. and he knows he has been criticized for it already. he has experienced the anger of the people on it. and he does it again? sotto is not only a hero plagiarist, he is a serial plagiarist. nothing imagined there and no judging there, just saying it plainly.

Sige defend the Comedian/Clown Senator… and then think of those sleepless nights of yours, countless trips to the library/Internet shops, skipping breaks/lunch, using all of your allowance for the photo copying machine just to finish your School Reports, Term Papers and Theses… sana ng cut copy paste nalang kayo, ng sayang pa kayo ng pagod…

This act of his is a BIG INSULT to us all, who painstakingly did the right thing to achieve what was required of us. as student, as an employee, as a professional and as a citizen this republic…. sige kampihan niyo ang mali since you are what this Senate Clown is made of…

It’s the RH Bill that matters now, not any1 else. People fail to understand the message. It’s always the person that most of us see not the intent of the person.

Is that all that you could do? To tarnish the reputation of Senator Sotto and discredit him for the things he is doing for our country? Who are you to judge him? Have you done something good for the country? Or you opted more on devoting your time criticizing people and making a fool out of the status of the person. I hope you suffer the same criticisms and bullying that Senator Sotto is experiencing right now…

    • September 6, 2012 at 9:06 am

google senator sotto tarnished his own reputation,

he had the freedom not to plagiarize. he did the first time. then he had another chance not to plagiarize, he did it again!

he should have learned his lesson the first time, but doing it again, for the 2nd time right after he has been criticized for it the first time he did it?

      this is all his.

    i have 4 questions:

    1. how can sotto not learn his lesson?
    2. how can he not be careful with his speeches since he was caught with his plagiarism?
    3. how can his speechwriters and his staff not make sure the plagiarism is not repeated?
    4. how can he not ask his staff not to plagiarize or check his speech for plagiarism?

    well, i have 2 more: :

    5. what is sotto thinking?
    6. what is it in him that he did not do all of the above?

      answers:

      1. how can sotto not learn his lesson?

lesson? what lesson? he was cyber-bullied!

      2. how can he not be careful with his speeches since he was caught with his plagiarism?

he can get away with the plagiarism raps, he has parliamentary immunity.

      3. how can his speechwriters and his staff not make sure the plagiarism is not repeated?

it’s not plagiarism as long as the words are translated in another language.

      4. how can he not ask his staff not to plagiarize or check his speech for plagiarism?

he does not care as long as he delivers his speech with conviction and drama (never mind if he copied the speech from blogs or google translate).

      5. what is sotto thinking?

      he thinks?!?!

      6. what is it in him that he did not do all of the above?

he has the best and smartest staff and CoS.

      please read answers with sarcasm.

sotto doing a remarkable job for the anti rh bill?

    let’s see:

    1. he has humiliated himself. remarkable!

    2. he has shamed the philippine senate and the country. remarkable!

    3. he has demonstrated he cannot be trusted, he lies often. remarkable!

    4. he showed just how bankrupt the anti rh bill are in idolizing him and putting him the best of them. remarkable!

    yes, he is remarkable.

(note : so far there have been 2 anti rh bill and sotto supporters who have attempted to do multiple posts using different names to create the impression that there are many anti-rh bill expressing their views here. these 2 are being dishonest. dishonesty sounds familiar? remarkable!)

It’s as remarkable as your arguments, dear sir. For judging too soon.Maybe if you comment fairly and see what the anti-RH bill is all about, you should comment on that instead rather than hit a senator🙂 You too are as remarkable as they come.

      • September 11, 2012 at 10:58 am

how is it judging when there is no question sotto was dishonest and plagiarized in his speeches not once but twice and in several parts of his speech? there are even concrete evidence that he did plagiarize. that is nt judging, that is stating facts.

        • Mia Esteve
          September 11, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Well stating facts doesn’t get you anywhere if you dont provide solutions to it. It’ll be yesterday’s news. But making people aware of the negative effects of the RH bill, that’s the one making the nation’s history. Focusing on a hatchet job too much, makes people merely spectators

            September 11, 2012 at 3:36 pm

first, the point is it is is not being judgemental when stating facts. sotto is dishonest and is a plagiarist. those are just facts, not being judgemental.

second, the solution is for sotto to a. stop plagiarizing and b. apologize for his dishonesty.

third, this blog is full of arguments for the #rhbill from various angles and authorities in their firleds, from studies and opinion.

fourth, sotto deserves the hatchet job very much.

    i fully agree with jim paredes (apo hiking society member) when asked his reactions about tito sotto’s plagiarism issue. Please read the excerpts below;

….“Ay, yun yung malaking mali siya dun. Tapos pinanindigan pa yung mali—yun ang pinakamahirap.

“Parang, for me, it was like a dent in a car that became a train wreck, di ba?

“Kung sinabi niya na lang, ‘Sorry, I bumped you.’ No! Nagmatigas pa.

“‘Hindi, ikaw ang nag-bump sa ‘kin, wala ‘kong kasalanan diyan!’ It became a big, big issue, you know.

“Which to me, pride is really the problem there. It’s not plagiarism.

“It’s very clear. Even the New York Times called him a plagiarist.

“I mean, he’s a… he’s an acquaintance. But, you know, I think mali siya dun.

“And he shouldn’t take issue when people say mali siya dun.

“Hindi siya iniinsulto, sinasabi lang na mali siya. I’m not making fun of him.

“Kasi yung sinasabi niya, binababoy daw siya, inaapi siya ng ano… hindi, hindi siya sina-cyber bully.

“Pinagtatawanan siya kasi pinaninindigan niya yung mali.”

distractions were created by sotto, not once but twice. not only did he not offer anything new yo the debate but also screwed it up by calling attention to himself with his dramatics and plagiarism and dishonesty.
