the winning ads of the 2016 Philippine election : as of January 2016

January 11, 2016 1 comment

in no particular order:

Presidentiable Jejomar Binay’s “Nognog” TV ad campaign

there is a new version under the “nognog” campaign that was aired today but it is not yet available at YouTube.

these two ads were the start of the “Nognog” campaign and these ads are associated with reversing Binay’s declining numbers at the presidentiable polls and in fact had put him back at the #1 spot.

we were shocked when these ads aired. the ads directly addressed the issues of allegations of graft and corruption on Binay which have been on the headlines for many months and the reason for the dramatic declines Binay have been suffering at the polls. Binay was definitely on a steep declining trend when these ads aired.

after the ads aired and the surveys released covering the period of airing, the numbers of Binay spiked up. in fact they were a dramatic reversal of the umbers and placed Binay back on top.

the ad effectively redefined the allegations of corruption and graft against Binay. he has been saying these to the press and in appearances in the provinces but it really didn’t do much to change his ratings. that is, until the ads were aired.

we think what made this ad work was the term “nognog” that he called himself in the ads. “nognog” is a derogatory term used on dark skinned Filipinos that was often used against him by anti-Binay voters. Binay is dark skinned and short (pandak).

“nognog” is also something that most Filipinos can relate to. while it may be a negative or derogatory among the Filipino rich who are fair-skinned Filipinos, it is a fair and acceptable description used by the masses among themselves. its use suddenly allowed the masa to relate to Binay.

we think Binay’s “nognog” has the potential to be the “Mr. Palengke” of Mar Roxas when he resoundingly won his senate seat.

Senatorial Leila De Lima’s “Justice without fear or favor”

this just aired today. it was different and called your attention. you paid attention to this ad. it is highly creative and you do get the message. this ad  is able to give De Lima an excellent brand positioning among the senatoriables. this ad was so good that De Lima was trending on twitter after the ad aired. the Philippine Daily Inquirer also had an article on it at their website. this extra mileage is what you get when you air a good ad. this ad can push De Lima to the number 1 spot among the senatoriables.

what got us going crazy in this ad is the use of umbrellas. the story of corruption, crime ad drugs is plain to see in the ad. nothing really special about that. but what set it apart aside from the retro feel to it is the use of the umbrellas.

think about it – why did they need to do  a rainy scenario out of the bar? it is January, it is not the rainy season now. the only explanation is that they wanted to use umbrellas in the ad.

and to us, the umbrella is the symbol of corruption, arrogance and power tripping that we saw when Junjun Binay, the mayor of Makati and the son of presidentiable jejomar Binay was caught in a video being shielded by a bodyguard with a giant umbrella on a  non rainy night at Urdaneta Village when he harassed the security guards to let him exit the gate of the village while they were not supposed to .

this ad firmly defines De Lima’s band positioning – as the anti crime and corruption super hero, a role she fulfilled admirably while she was DOJ chief. this cements that positioning for her.

in some way, we think this positioning of hers and this ad has the potential to take away the thunder from Duterte’s tough on crime positioning.

the ad also has excellent production values. the cinematography, direction, lighting, casting and acting were very topnotch. its fun to watch!

Presidentiable Rody Duterte’s “Merry Christmas”

Duterte is a presidentiable that you either hate or love. and there is no in-between – either you passionately love him or passionately hate him.  but this ad you take notice and the ending of the ad makes you smile. do not know if the haters have changed their minds about Duterte, but this ad you like for its wit and unexpected ending.

these ads are not a wawam!

no love gained by arroyo, neck brace plus wheelchair – 82% of pinoys think she was treated fairly to too lenient by government

December 26, 2011 1 comment

we were surprised at the results of the SWS survey poll on the treatment of former president arroyo at the airport when she attempted to flee the country to avoid facing charges.we knew the results will be in favor of the government and in disfavor towards arroyo but we were surprised that it would be this high.

arroyo's near escape experience at the airport. neck brace and wheel chair included

arroyo had all the props that day – face mask, wheelchair and the famous neck brace but she was stopped at the airport on the basis of  DOJ  cheif leila de lima issuing a stop departure order on arroyo, defying  the supreme court decision to impose a TRO on the hold departure order.

it is an amazing number – 69% of filipinos saying arroyo’s treatment was fair. this already astonishgly high number once added to the other number of 13% thinking the government was too lenient arroyo goes up to a total of 82%  thinking arroyo was treated too lenient to just fair.

there is obviously no love gained by arroyo after she stepped down from the presidency.  she has of course been getting very bad numbers when she was president, she is the only president who has gotten back to back quarters of “no trust”, “no performance satisfaction” for many years.  but we thought being out of office would have given time for people to think kinder of  arroyo and most specially the illness that was highly publicized and her “near death” predicament as announced by her lawyers would have gained arroyo some sympathy. that did not work

core to this no love gained situation arroyo is in is the people’s mistrust of arroyo or as the survey says “little trust” on arroyo – an astonishing  73%.  this also surprised at, but like the  other above,   is the degree or its very high “no trust” rating that surprised us.

we guess what everyone else are saying about “trust” is clearly true in arroyo’s case – trust needs to be earned.  the people have always had problems trusting arroyo even during her administration. her trust ratings or “no trust” ratings have always been dismal during her presidency.

come to think of it, aside from stepping down from the presidency, what has arroyo done to earn the trust of the people? nothing , really. faking her illness, the wheelchair and the famous neck brace are really very poor efforts at regaining the trust of the people. the people, despite the high priced st. lukes hospital digs saw through all of it and was unable to earn for her trust.

no love given, no trust earned. that’s a very sad love affair with the filipino people. specially on christmas.

actions from the de lima report – noynoy aquino’s last chance to save himself

September 17, 2010 Leave a comment

an 83 plus page  final report and at least four other thick booklets have been given to president noynoy aquino by leila de lima, head of the 5-man committee that investigated the lunata bus hostage rescue bloodbath.

several doors are still open, we are hoping at minimum at least a few will be closed. with the end of de lima’s investigation and the submission of the final report. one big door that we are hoping will be closed is the this gaping hole of aquino’s weak leadership.  aquino has a last chance to close that door, for him to show true leadership and save himself from a tarnished image as a leader of a nation.

aquino should show, finally good leadership by taking the final report’s conclusions and fire DILG Usec puno, PNP chief versoza, NCRPO chief santiago, ground commander magtibay, leader of the SWAT team pascual, the SWAT team members,  leaders of all the teams who were at the hostage crisis and the RMN radio anchors who interviewed the hostage taker.  they should all be fired and with some charged with crimes for bungling the rescue of the hostages.  sec robredo should be fired for not managing the situation and not saving his boss, president aquino after the hostage crisis.

if aquino does not take this decisive action as the leader fo the country, aquino’s image as a leader will be tarnished forever. henceforth, he will be indexed against this incident.

to DOJ chief designate Leila de Lima – it is the constitution and the law, stupid

June 23, 2010 1 comment

we celebrate noynoy aquino’s choice as DOJ chief in Leila de Lima. this woman knows her laws and has more balls than all the men in arroyo’s cabinet members have.

in her new role, we hope de lima will remember her true role – defender of the constitution and laws of the country, nothing more and nothing more. she serves the people in doing that job.

we are saying that as we have seen the various DOJ chiefs under arroyo forgetting what their job is.  under arroyo, the DOJ chief lawyered only for gloria macapagal arroyo, the person and the president, not for the country, not for the people and certainly not for the constitution and our laws.

we hope de lima will return DOJ  to its rightful place.

Rights chief to head DoJ

De Lima’s job: Pursue big grafters

MANILA, Philippines—A woman is poised to take on the toughest portfolio in the Cabinet of President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Leila de Lima, the outspoken chair of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), met with Aquino at his Times Street residence shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday and left an hour later.

“He offered the position, I accepted. He will make the announcement,” De Lima told reporters after the meeting. She did not specify the position but it is widely assumed to be that of the justice secretary.

She said she would have to resign from the CHR where she is in the second year of a 7-year term.

The feisty legal eagle rose to prominence as a tough-talking election lawyer for the Genuine Opposition in 2007. She was appointed CHR chair when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was parrying criticism for the record number of extrajudicial killings in her term.

Aquino had earlier told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the justice portfolio was very crucial in his fight against corruption. He said his justice secretary would serve as his attack dog in pushing corruption cases against the First Family and its allies, crime syndicates, drug lords and smugglers.
