Pulse Asia March 2014 presidentiables survey : don’t panic, it’s only 2014

May 1, 2014 Leave a comment

one fine day at the end of april 2014, we were greeted with headlines on print and broadcast media similar to what rappler.com had – vp jejomar binay an announced candidate for the 2016 presidential election tops all of them with a whopping 40% of the survey answers as the candidate mar2014 Pulse Rapplerthe respondents will vote if the election was held today.

that is like a just little less than 2 years till the may 2016 elections. a long way off till election time.

and that is the reason why the other presidentiables (ahem, mar roxas and alan peter cayetano) should not panic. the standings of the candidates will change dramatically as we approach may 2016. that is guaranteed – dramatic and drastic.

people’s sentiments change over time and so does the behavior of the presidentiables, not to mention the campaign programs and ads the candidates will be releasing before and during the campaign period.  more importantly, studies show that the farther from election time, the more fickle voters are. it says voters get to firm up their choices the nearer election time goes. many start firming up their choices just 1 to 2 weeks before the election. in fact for the swing votes, many firm up their choices just 1 or 2 days before election time.

these type of development can be seen in previous elections where we can see the dramatic changes in the survey standings of the presidentiables.

for posterity, we will be posting here the data tables of the this pulse asia march 2014 presidentiables survey and the other survey results for vice presidentiable and senatoriables. the charts have been picked up from rappler.com (read here : http://www.rappler.com/nation/56725-binay-runaway-winner-pulse-asia-poll)

mar2014 Presidential

we were surprised by the strong showing, on third, of senator miriam defensor santiago. her strong stance against the PDAF scam has put her on that spot.

grace poe has come out as second here mainly due to her strong showing in the senate hearings. she has come out as very intelligent and poised in these hearings.

vp jejomar binay coming out as top is no surprise. his position as VP has helped him a lot to be in that spot.

mar roxas although he has not declared he will run for president, but we all know he will run, came in very low at 5th with just 6% (versus binay’s 40%). perhaps his performance during the yolanda storm may have affected him here.

mar2014 VP

chiz escudero seem to be a perennial favorite for the vice presidential slot. maybe it is time for him to have a go at it.

mar2014 senators

we are shocked that senator tito sotto is among the top 3 specially when taking at look at where manny pacquaio is. sotto is among the top 3 while pacquaio is way below on the top 18. it is hard to reconcile how sotto a plagiarist can be on top and beat out pacquiao who is a national hero for many pinoys. makes us wonder that perhaps pacquaio is not as favored as we think or more importantly as what he thinks he is.

mar2014 senators 2

how should the candidates proceed from this?

  • take the results with a mountain of salt
  • need to monitor developments
  • candidates and planners should draw some conclusions from the survey results
  • common denominators should be pulled out
  • from these conclusions, they should draw out a research plan
  • conduct research based on these results

we think it is important for the candidates to draw learnings from thes results and draw up medium to long-term action plans.

watch presidentiables tv ads during the pacquiao-cotto fight

November 14, 2009 1 comment

aside from the actual fight, the things to watch out for in tomorrow’s fight are the tv ads of the presidentiables and other political candidates. for sure the politicians will be airing their ads heavily if not air new tv ads. i would be very surprised if the presidentiables do not launch new tv ads during the fight.

the pacquiao-cotto fight is probably the closest the country comes to The Super Bowl in the US where practically all homes in the US tune in on the Super Bowl with many having parties and the US ad industry going crazy in airing their best and brightest. the Super Bowl brings in the audience, the ratings are always sky-high which allows the Super Bowl to price their tv spot at an amazing $3 Million per 30 second spot.

(read more on Super Bowl Ads here: http://the-wawam-file.blogspot.com/search/label/super%20bowl).

at that extremely high cost, the US ad industry kills itself in coming up with their best ads. ads aired in the Super Bowl has become an event in itself where the audience have come to expect and anticipate great ads. talks the day after at water coolers among the audience are not only on the game itself but also the ads they saw in the super bowl.

(view ads aired in the Super Bowl here: http://the-wawam-file.blogspot.com/search/label/super%20bowl%20ads)

careers and marketing success are made at the super bowl for ad people and ad agencies. apple was one and coca cola is another.

it will not be exactly what will happen in the pacquiao-cotto fight but we can expect presidentiables to air new ads tomorrow. the fight will most likely get the highest rating this year and the history of advertising in the country. while 30 second ad costs are expected to be extremely high, we think, just like at the super bowl, it is very much worth it.

gilbert teodoro did it during the pacquiao-hatton fight where he aired his disaster preparedness tv ad and introduced himself for the first time to the voters. (read here: gilbert who? introduces himself in tv ad) teodoro’s ad was aired in every commercial break in that fight.

let us just hope that the quality of the ads the politicians will air tomorrow will be as good as the ones aired in the super bowl.

here is a thought:

loren legarda said she will announce her plans for 2010 on november 15. hmm…… we wonder if legarda will do it via a new tv ad to be aired tomorrow during the fight?

(read here: drama queen senator loren legarda to announce 2010 plans within the week! oh, oh – here we go again!)

why manny pacquiao should not run for public office

May 27, 2009 2 comments

we don’t know for sure if manny pacquaio, the country’s boxing hero will run for congress or not.  on some days he seem to be saying he will but on some we’re not sure what he is saying.

he has seeked approval from the comelec to accredit a political party, so that is a sign of his intention to run.

but when he is asked a direct question by reporters, he fudges his answers. he seem to be saying yes he will but it does not sound definitive.

should manny pacquaio run for political office?

i think i heard him say in an interview he wants to run for elective office because he wants to “help the people”. it is what all candidates say. it is also the most generic answer any political candidate can give to that question. being such a pandemic answer among all candidates that i think it has lost meaning.

but let us not judge for now. let us say pacquiao means it.

what does “help the people” mean? that is actually the question i want pacquaio to answer the most. in what ways will he help the people if he is a congressman?

pacquaio is the closest any one living filipino closest to being a national hero. in his lastpacmanfight, i will not be exaggerating if i said around 99.99% of filipinos were tuned in to their radios and tv set  cheering him on. when pacquaio won, 99.99% of filipinos cheered for him.

not only did we hear the loud cheering, we also heard the pride and inspiration that his won sparked in 99.99% of all filipinos. he is to us the picture of a pinoy who by hard work, smarts and power catapulted himself to global stardom. we knew that it wasn’t just filipinos who cheered and admired him, it was the rest of the world as well. he is not just a national hero, he is world class and a champion in the world history of all boxing.

and we love that. we are awed by it. we are proud. and that inspires us.

with those, i do not think there is any other filipino now who has helped the people in a bigger and more profound way as pacquaio has done.

his plan of becoming a candidate is driven by his desire to “help the people”. does he not know that he is already doing that. does he not know that in fact no other filipino is able to help the people as much as he has been doing with his boxing triumphs?

his winning his fights help us believe in ourselves, in the capabilities of filipinos. it gives pinoys hope and rekindles in great measure our belief that in this country of ours, hard work, doing the right thing and excellence delivers dividends. his victories jolts us out of skepticism about our capabilities and how individual efforts can change thing.

if pacquaio wants to help the people, he can do this best by being who he is, by being the best that he can be  – by being a champion boxer, not as a congressman. we do not think he will be able to achieve the kind of help to the people by being a congressman than being a champion boxer.

the best help he can give the people is for him to continue to be who he is, to be exactly the person we admire him to be – the world class boxing champion who is a pinoy.

Memo To: Manny Pacquiao- Think First Before You Speak, you know…

May 11, 2009 Leave a comment

recent days have media a-buzz with manny pacquiao’s announcement he intends to “sabak”/to join politics. 2010 Presidentiables were ambivalent about his plans, to say the least. (read here: http://tinyurl.com/cbnyo8)

it’s either this is a start of something good or something bad for pacquiao. so, this early we would like to issue our “Memo To” to mr. pacquiao.

dear mr. pacquiao:

  • most important point – with your announcement of running for public office, your life has changed, both your public and private life. henceforth, anything you say, do and think will be gauged by the public and media from a different and new perspective – that of a politician running for office. each one will be scrutinized and more importantly, anything you say, do or think will be used by the public, voters specifically as basis in deciding if they will vote for you or not. in marketing terms, this means you are building a brand image.
  • your statement saying you might sing the national anthem in your next fight given the controversy martin niviera’s off-singing of it is one example where we think you need to exercise this: THINK BEFORE SPEAK.
  • as  a politician and future elected government official, you need to be aware that the key issue behind nievera’s singing is not really just the singing per se, but  the question of patriotism and nationalism. this is on the respect or disrespect of national symbols.
  • as a politician, you are better off standing on the side of the law and on the side of patriotism and nationalism. if you run for congress, your role is to write laws and you want the citizens to respect and follow the laws you will write.
  • if nievera is your friend and you do not want to offend him, then perhaps you should find a middle ground on what you will say – a place where it will not offend nievera and where you will not sound like you are disrespecting a law.
  • better yet, show your statemanship and convince nievera to apologize for his wrong doing. being able to do this will show not only statemanship but also strong leadership. it will also put you on the side of what is right and smart.

we do have another memo coming up for you, but for the meantime, this memo is for your perusal.

you know…  yours truly,

~2010 Presidentiables.wordpress~

MANILA Philippines – Next time around, Manny Pacquiao might just sing it himself.

Amid the hullabaloo stirred by what many consider an improper rendition of the national anthem by Martin Nievera before the Pacquiao-Hatton bout last May 3, the Filipino boxing idol said he is willing to sing the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” in his next fight.

“Pwede naman siguro ‘yun (That’s possible) next time… next fight,” a beaming Pacquiao said.

manny pacquiao forms his own political party

May 5, 2009 Leave a comment

pacquiao-party

is this an "oh, shit!" or an "whoopee!"?

pacquiao has petitioned the comelec to accredit a political party called “Peoples Champ Movement” as a local party. he will most likely run for congress and they will field candidates in local positions in general santos city and sarangani.

“People’s Champ Movement” reminds me of “Champ” the jollibee hamburger. but i suppose that is much better than “Pambansang Kamao Movement” or “Pacman The Champ Movement”. i am also glad they dropped the idea of  “Champ Ako, You Know…”  (read   “manny pacquioa is a loser, you know..” here: http://tinyurl.com/cpkojn)

forming his own party is a good idea. that way he can define the direction he wants his party to take. it also frees him from being beholden to anyone or any ideology.

running for congress next year is a bad idea for him, career wise. freddie roach thinks pacquiao has two to three more good years as a champion fighter. that means mega-$ in fees and purse, possibly the biggest in the history of boxing and in the process cementing his place as one of the boxing greats in the sport’s history.

this congress thing will be very distracting for him. distraction at this point in in his career is a very bad thing. pacquiao has just gotten one step inside the halls of boxing greatness. the next two to three years of boxing will get him right in the middle of it.

we think it is ok for him to form the political party if that cannot be stopped anymore but he should not run for congress and just be the leader of his party. he should define what it is all about, set directions and the philiosphy and show the country he has more than just boxing prowess but leadership and vision for his city and the country.
