at last, a great TV ad for Mar Roxas!!! wait….

hold your breath and watch this great TV ad for Mar Roxas….

i listened to every word, watched every visual and around the first 1/4 of the ad, i said, wow what a great TV ad for Mar Roxas. at last, Mar Rocas has a great TV ad, something we have all been waiting for.

i was looking forward to the ending on the ad. i said to myself, Roxas will appear at the end of the ad and say something smart and uplifting. i thought this will be a great end shot. the whole ad had great cinematography and it had a great tempo to it, so a great ending with Roxas saying something that will lift all our souls and give us hope is a great ending.

at last, the music told me the ad will end pretty soon, i eagerly waited for a glorious end shot of Mar Roxas….

and then i saw Ralph Recto’s face at the end shot! what????

the pounding in my heart stopped. i blinked twice and i felt so very disappointed it was not a Mar Roxas. it is a Ralph Recto ad!

OMG!

it’s a great ad. the contents were great, it’s uplifting and gave us hope. it made us feel good things about the country and the candidate. unfortunately not for Mar Roxas, the administration candidate languishing at the bottom of the surveys.

congratulations Ralph Recto – you aired a great ad!

okay before i continue with the halleluiahs, there is a problem with the ad – it is too long! it is a 60 second TV ad. i must admit the ad didn’t feel like it was a 60 second ad. it was so good that i didn’t notice, in fact i didn’t notice the length of the ad. honestly, i found out it was a 60 second TV ad only when i found the video at YouTube.

why am i making a big deal on the length of that ad? well, first the last time i saw a 60 second TV ad aired on TV was in the 70s. with very high cost of media airtime, nobody produces 60 second TV ads anymore, and that is the second reason why i am making a big deal of the length of the ad. airing this ad is very, very costly! but maybe Recto has tons of money to burn, so i’ll take a pass on the issue.

the ad is very presidential. it gives a very positive view of the country and what has been done in the philippines. it is so  presidential that i really thought it was an ad by Mar Roxas. in fact, if you put Noynoy Aquino at the end of this ad, it will also work very well.

Recto is running for senator. is this ad being so presidential bad for Recto? no. it sets Recto apart from other senatoriables. and if he had a hand in all of the things he listed there, he deserves  to be elected president, errr a seat at the senate.

this ad makes you feel good about the Philippines. and it tells you that we have done a lot and that Aquino should continue to be president, err Recto should be re-elected senator.

there is really nothing wrong with this ad. it is a great ad! the only thing wrong is that it’s not a Mar Roxas ad. but wait, that’s not Recto’s fault, it is the fault of the Mar Roxas team for not coming up with ads with this quality.

 

 

malacanang delivers THE BOMB on senatoriable mitos magsaysay

Palace to Mitos: Thanks, but no thanks

MANILA – Malacañang doubts that United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial candidate Mitos Magsaysay wants President Aquino to “succeed,” disputing her statement that UNA senatorial candidates give constructive criticisms to help the administration “to be the best that it could be.”

“Thank you Rep. Mitos but the President and his Cabinet do not need a US Army slogan to excel. The President has been doing good governance for the past three years, much admired by both the local and international communities, notwithstanding your ‘friendly’ help,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a text message.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte described Magsaysay’s statement as a “turnaround” from the critical statements that Magsaysay has issued about President Aquino.

Valte pointed out the Magsaysay has called Aquino several names.

Magsaysay once described Aquino as “the most amateur, stubborn, laid back, lazy, immature, and least knowledgeable president we ever had.”

That is certainly a turnaround from the two-and-a-half years worth of statements that Representative Magsaysay has been issuing against the President. Very early on, she had already let loose of several names about the President… With friends like that, who needs enemies?” Valte said.

“She’s not in the slate of the President. That speaks volumes for itself,” Valte added.

Lacierda earlier said that UNA senatorial candidates are confusing the public by wanting to be associated with President Aquino to increase their chances of winning but have been very critical of the administration.

mitos magsaysay since noynoy aquino became president had nothing but criticism and disdain on aquino on every any topic, with or without an issue. for some reason, mitos is always interviewed by media and for some reason she has given some comment, or the other on anything aquino does. and more than always, she would give a negative comment.

this reaction on malacanang to mitos is understandable and certainly deserving of mitos magsaysay.

nitos is on the 21-22nd spot in the latest SWS senatoriables, a long way off from making it to the top 12.

2013 Senatoriables SWS survey – cynthia villar should fire her advertising agency

key points on the top 12:

  • top three continue to be legarda, escudero and cayetano (alan peter)  in that order. they have been the same top three in the three surveys conducted by SWS
  • among the top 12, poe had the largest increase in ranking, by 10 places to rank #10 from rank #20 in the previous survey
  • other biggest increases in rank are for enrile (jack) at +2, now #8  and honasan  at +3, now #5
  • cayetano and enrile have been running tv political ads and may be showing its impact in the rankings
  • the largest decrease in ranking is with villar (cynthia) who dropped -4 places, now #8 from #4. it appears villar’s heavy tv advertising is not working for her.
  • it’s interesting that villar’s first name is officially listed in the Comelec and we assume on the official ballot as “Cynthia Misis Hanepbuhay”. this will probably be villar’s positioning in her ad campaigns
  • other biggest decreases in ranking are on binay (nancy), -3 places to now #12 from #9 and zubiri -2 places now #7

key points on the bottom 13 to 24:

  • a major increase  was gained by villanueva who now place at #23. he was not on the top 24 in the two previous surveys. this is the result of his announcing his candidacy.
  •  the following suffered in ranking –  aquino, madrigal, maceda, magsaysay (mitos) and casino. 

we would recommend the following: 

  • villar to fire her advertising agency and immediately change her advertising campaign. her ads even though aired very early and spent heavily is not working for her. 
  • it is still too early to tell. these rankings will still change and some could be dramatic changes as the real campaign starts.
  • candidates should be doing heavy voter research now for the purpose of improving or airing new political ads.

senatoriable nancy binay’s TV ad – empty promises glorified

nancy binay, daughter of vice president jejomar binay will run for senator.  she released a tv ad, legally epal, with the tagline “Kay Nancy Binay – mga bata gaganda ang buhay” (With Nancy Binay – children will have a more beautiful life).

the ad positions the senatoriable as pro children with the  specific promises of improving education (“gaganda ang edukasyon”) and improving health (gaganda ang kalusugan”) leading to a more beautiful life (“gaganda ang buhay”) for the children.

it is an interesting positioning as it specifically places nancy on a pro-children promise. we do not remember political candidates having taken this positioning in the past. question is, is this enough to get her elected? is children’s good life a compelling proposition to voters? we assume some research has been done on this one.

while nancy’s advertising positioning and promise  is specific to pro-children, it is not specific on exactly what she plans to do in promoting the “good life” of children through “good education” and “good health”. it does not specifically answer the question – how will she do it?

in advertising, what is missing is called the “reason why” or the support. it tells the audience how will the candidate deliver the promise, what will she do to make it happen.

from an advertising technical standpoint it does have a “reason why” – it uses her dad, vice president binay with copy that says “mana sa kanyang ama” (“takes up [inherit] from her father”)  but does not say any specific action that nancy will take to improve education and health for children. all it does is to ride on the general popularity of her dad. after all, he did get elected vice president in the last presidential elections.

but jejomar is a weak reason why for the promise of children’s welfare – he is not known to be a children’s welfare advocate. in fact his ads during the vice presidential campaign were more on the general progress in the city of makati and the specific benefits residents of makati have gained while he was mayor there, children’s welfare was hardly mentioned.

the reason why, specially in political ads is very important. it gives specific promises as to what plan of action the candidate will do when elected into office. using a reason why that does not connect to the promise is of no help and of no consequence, it is like having none at all.

in this ad, nancy binay gave empty promises that we doubt will get her elected. it’s a WAWAM – what a waste of advertising money.

pulse asia december 2009 senatoriables poll – to win, the challenge is differentiation

with so many candidates, the key challenge for the senatoriables is differentiation. there is a good number of candidates who already have a national persona and a politicial base, the key for newbies is to get at least one head higher than the rest.
