MMDA’s Bayani Fernando – #1 uglifier of metro manila picture gallery

this is a sample of bayani fernando’s uglifying effort of metro manila. the whole effort has very good intentions, it’s just the choice of the color scheme – his favorite pink and bright blue.

this is located on katipunan road towards ateneo/UP right before the overpass that crosses aurora avenue.  the area is elevated like on a short hill. before bayani’s pink make-over, the houses on those hills were run down – unpainted wood as walls, make do roofing and generally small homes of disrepair.

bayani’s make over involved changing the wood, fixing the roofs, evening out the cement and of course painting them in pink and bright blue.

the effort of improving the homes is definitely commendable. we don’t think any of the home owners were thinking of fixing their homes anytime soon, they would not have the funds for it. so that’s the good intentions part. but did bayani have to paint them in pink and bright blue?

the color scheme both uglified a good intent and metro manila.

ang nakakatawa este nakakaajit sa lahat ay puro pang labas anyu lang ang inaayus at pinipinturahan.. ang mga bahay sa likuran ay pakshet pa rin ang condition.. even the people inside these renovated houses are no less having a better way of life

it just shows that this govt is busy covering up the dank smell of poverty and most of all its (in)action towrds its people’s needs.

remeber the bapor tabo in rizal’s novel..its the same here.
the differnce is that they are just painting it pink

About Bayani Fernando, he is one who would make a very good executive…my apologies, has already PROVEN he is a good executive. He is unafraid top do things which are unpopular even if it will cost him voters, a rare quality.

He gets the job done on or before schedule, has excellent time management despite being head of numerous groups, efficient in maximizing scarce resources (remember how Markina started from earning less than P 70 million to billions and how the MMDA’s meager budget always seems to be stretched?), an engineer, he is trained to look at the bigger picture, work hard, talk less. All these would have made him the perfect CEO of a corporation, or on a larger scale, the country, even.

I do not think he is the #1 uglifier of Metro Manila, that record goes to the vandals and us who litter everywhere.

Unfortunately, for all his good points, he seriously has to consider hiring landscape architects if he wants people want to take him seriously. He has tried advertising this need on radio but I doubt many know about this.

the problem with fernando is that he is now well liked by many. he is a very polarizing leader. while the things he has done for metro manila are good, he is unable to get widespread support. perhaps a weakness on his leadership style.

Mali na rin kasi yung ginagawa nya e. Ok lang kahit pink yung roads. Kaso pati ba naman mga bahay?

Sakop pa ba yun ng authority nya?

    • June 27, 2009 at 10:41 am

that is a good question – painting or repairing homes is not part of his authority. in fact that is not job of any government agency.

fernando did not just paint the homes pink, he actually repaired them from walls to the roof.

why did he do it? it is certainly not totally charitable, he did it because that is an excellent location for his propaganda. those homes are located on a busy road, katipunan and it is elevated that everyone and anyone travelling on that road will see. painting them in his signature hot pink allows him mileage – people will see he did something good there.

for sure fernando’s obsession with pink and the pink & blue combination says he has very poor taste.

it is bad enough metro manila roads are narrow, badly designed and a mess, he now colors the city in pink and pink & blue.

I prefer the tastes of his wife, Mayor Marides Fernando (who replaced Bayani as mayor of Marikina City) who does not paint Marikina blue and pink but varies color and has improved what Fernando began in Marikina City. Instead of just paint jobs she has also implemented now undergoing urban renewal facelifts and some areas of Marikina remind me of Holland/Netherlands.
