1,400 Catholic schools back call vs ‘Marcos snares, Imeldific lies’

MANILA, Philippines – More than 1,400 Catholic schools represented by their group, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), joined the call against the supposed attempt of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr “to canonize” his father’s regime.

“The Trustees of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, representing the 1,425 CEAP member-schools, colleges, and universities, support the faculty of the Ateneo de Manila University in their call against the attempt of Ferdinand Marcos Jr to canonize the harrowing horrors of martial rule,” CEAP said in a statement late Monday evening, March 7.

The statement is titled, “CEAP Supports Call Against Marcosian Snares and Imeldific Lies.”

CEAP issued this statement after presidents of the Philippines’ 5 Ateneo universities, run by the Jesuit religious order, lent their weight to a call against the “revision of history” by Marcos Jr.

In the statement released on March 7, CEAP said it supports the Ateneo de Manila University’s faculty in condemning “the attempt of Ferdinand Marcos Jr to canonize the harrowing truths of martial rule.”

“With the same fervor, we cry our hearts out, ‘Never Again!’” CEAP added.

Like the Ateneo professors, CEAP said they remained committed to teach the truth, calling upon the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education to have “the same level of introspection.”

However, they also admit possible shortcomings: “It seems we have been remiss in instilling in the youth’s consciousness about the regime’s brutal savagery. Instead they have been drowned out by the Marcosian snares and the Imeldific lies.”

‘Willful distortion of history’

The original statement from the Ateneo faculty had nearly 530 signatories from the Ateneo community as of March 7.

Along with faculty from the Grade School, High School, and Loyola Schools, Ateneo Presidents have also added their signatures.

Of these, Ateneo de Zamboanga University President Fr Karel San Juan, SJ and Ateneo de Davao University President Fr Joel Tabora, SJ are members of the CEAP board of trustees. Tabora is the CEAP vice president while San Juan is the CEAP trustee for the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Ateneo faculty railed against “the shameless refusal to acknowledge the crimes of the Martial Law regime” and “the revision of history, disturbing vision of the future, and shallow call for ‘unity’ being presented by Marcos Jr and like-minded candidates in the 2016 elections.”

They issued the statement in response to Marcos saying historians, not politicians, should judge his father’s rule.

Catholic schools vs Marcos regime

Students and faculty of Catholic schools were some of the major opponents of the Marcos regime with many members joining the protest movements long before EDSA I in 1986.

Ateneo graduates like former Antique Evelio Javier, poet and activist Emmanuel Lacaba, and youth activist Edgar Jopson were outspoken critics of the Marcos regime. All 3 died under Marcos’ rule. (READ: Edjop, Imelda Marcos, and the fear of forgetting)

Other prominent Catholic educators in the Philippines like Sr Mary John Mananzan, former president of St Scholastica’s College Manila, also stood up against martial law and participated in EDSA I.

Senator Marcos has staunchly defended his father’s regime, refusing to apologize for whatever may have happened during that period. (READ: ‘Bongbong Marcos knows what to apologize for’)

According to Amnesty International, about 34,000 were tortured. Nearly 3,240 were killed. Others lived to retell their ordeal so that the new generation would learn from this dark period of Philippine history. (WATCH: ‘Lucky day’: Surviving torture during martial law)

5 Ateneo university presidents join condemning Bongbong Marcos for historical revision

MANILA, Philippines – Leaders of the Philippines’ 5 Ateneo universities, run by the biggest religious order in the Catholic Church, joined the call against the “revision of history” by Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Like nearly 530 others as of Monday, March 7, the 5 Ateneo presidents signed a statement titled, “We are not blind to the darkness and oppression of the Marcos years!”

Initially released on March 2, it is a statement “of concerned members of the Ateneo de Manila University on the martial law regime and Bongbong Marcos’ revision of history.”

The statement was initially signed by at least 412 members of the Ateneo community, a number that rose by more than a hundred in less than a week.

Statement of concerned members of the Ateneo de Manila University on the Martial Law regime and Bongbong Marcos’ revision of history

In response to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos, Jr.’s call that teachers and students of history should make a judgment about the Marcos administration, we, the undersigned members of the Ateneo de Manila community, vehemently oppose and condemn the ongoing willful distortion of our history. We deplore the shameless refusal to acknowledge the crimes of the Martial Law regime. We reject the revision of history, disturbing vision of the future, and shallow call for “unity” being presented by Marcos Jr. and like-minded candidates in the 2016 elections.

The Marcos regime’s economics of debt-driven growth was disastrous for the Philippines. The regime was not interested in inclusive development, long-term state-building, nor genuine social transformation of the country, despite its “New Society” rhetoric. Instead, Marcos was mainly concerned with perpetuating his personal hold on power by favoring family members, friends, and other cronies. Thus, Marcos simply created new elites or “oligarchs” rather than abolish them — supposedly one of his main justifications for declaring martial law. Those who dared challenge the regime’s monopoly on power, whether politicians, business people, political activists, organized labor, peasants or urban poor, Church workers, students — young or old, rich or poor — were intimidated, imprisoned, kidnapped, tortured or summarily executed.

We refuse to forget the atrocities committed by the Marcos regime, and we renew our demand that the perpetrators of these crimes be brought to justice. We also reiterate our position that the government should relentlessly pursue and reclaim all the ill-gotten wealth accumulated by the Marcos family and its cronies. Moreover, victims and their families should be given justice and compensation in full. Any call for unity, most especially from the heirs of the Marcos regime which bitterly divided the country, will be empty and meaningless unless truth and justice are upheld.

We affirm our commitment as faculty members and formators always to teach the truth. The Marcos dictatorship should be remembered as one of the darkest periods of Philippine history. We reaffirm our responsibility as teachers and professionals to keep the spirit of EDSA 1986 alive by imparting to the young that the structures, actions and ideas — including the many lies — that allowed

the Marcos dictatorship to impose and perpetuate itself, should be eliminated and never again be allowed to flourish. At the same time, we will work to bring to fruition the dream of EDSA for a more just and democratic society.

We reject the argument that democracy does not “work” in the Philippines and that only a dictatorship, benevolent or otherwise, is capable of bringing our country to prosperity. We must instead encourage and harness the full democratic capacity of our people and institutions in order to progress as a nation. Although inequality and injustice continue to persist, we believe the solution to these problems lies in deepening our democratic institutions and practices, empowering the marginalized, and exacting accountability from our leaders and ourselves.

We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, attempts by some individuals and particularly public figures, to whitewash the Marcos regime’s wanton violation of human rights and to distort its political-economic record. We call on all our politicians, especially those who are running for office in the 2016 national and local elections, to take a definite stand on the abuses of the Marcos dictatorship. We challenge them to join our call never again to allow the conditions of tyranny to take root in our society. We demand that candidates who directly or indirectly participated in and benefited from the regime, apologize and, if necessary, make restitution for their role in the regime or their support for it. Finally, we reject any attempt to give Ferdinand E. Marcos a hero’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

We vow as teachers and formators to continue to tell the stories of the brutality and corruption of the Marcos family, regime and closest allies. We aspire to keep alive the ideals and heroism of the many brave Filipinos who fought the regime. For as long as we remember and share these stories, we believe that future generations of Filipinos will learn the lessons of the years of struggle leading to the overthrow of the dictatorship during those historic days of the People Power Revolution in 1986.

It has become a glib talking point of the Marcos revisionists and loyalists to say that the People Power Revolution has “failed.” We vehemently disagree. It was truly a genuine popular uprising and triumph against dictatorship. The revolution, however, is unfinished. The fullness of democratization, especially the creation of a social order which respects the dignity of all Filipinos, has yet to be achieved. It is our responsibility now as a people to continue and complete this unfinished struggle.

We must start with the truth.

groups oppose martial law in maguindanao – martial law has no basis

we are printing here the voices of many groups who are opposed to the declaration of martial law im maguindanao. many of these groups are saying martial law was an over-kill, unnecessary with the country having enough laws to achieve the stated goals and it has no legal basis.

“The official, unanimous position is we see no legal and factual basis for martial law,” De Lima told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a text message, following an emergency meeting by the CHR commissioners en banc Sunday morning.

De Lima said the CHR’s opposition to President Macapagal-Arroyo’s martial rule in the province was “because of its serious repercussions on the human rights situation in the area.”

The outspoken rector of the Bacolod Diocese’s San Sebastian Cathedral called on the Filipino people to stand up and oppose President Macapagal-Arroyo’s declaration of martial law in Maguindanao because it would set a dangerous precedent for the entire nation.

“President Gloria Arroyo is person obsessed and addicted to power, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, so martial law in her hands is very dangerous,” Fr. Felix Pasquin said.

There is no legal basis for the President to declare martial law, and it is also immoral,” Pasquin said, adding that it was an overreaction to the situation in Maguindanao.

The Supreme Court disputed the government’s contention that the court system in Maguindanao was no longer functioning, one of the stated reasons for declaring martial law in the Central Mindanao province.

Lawyers, lawyers’ groups, Church prelates and the Commission on Human Rights also disputed whether the constitutional basis for declaring martial law—invasion or rebellion—was present in the Maguindanao situation.

Midas Marquez, the high court’s deputy administrator and spokesperson, said the cases involving the Maguindanao massacre that were filed before the Cotabato courts were moving forward.

He said it was the search warrants issued by the Kidapawan Regional Trial Court that made possible the police raids on the residences of Ampatuan family members, the suspected perpetrators of the massacre.

“This is far from a picture of a non-performing judicial system,” said Marquez.

Senators Benigno Aquino III, Alan Peter Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Jamby Madrigal and Francis Pangilinan separately questioned the President’s action which, Malacañang had said, was needed to quell a “rebellion in the offing” by forces loyal to the powerful Arroyo ally, the Ampatuan clan.

In a press conference late Saturday afternoon, Senators Aquino and Mar Roxas, the Liberal Party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates in 2010, said they were prepared to challenge the declaration of martial law before the Supreme Court.
