Memo To: Bro. Eddie Villanueva – get rid of your Communication Team, they failed you

Memo To: Bro. Eddie Villanueva,

we like to call your attention to the performance of your communication team specific to the august 21 announcement of your candidacy for the president.

that day is probably the most important day of your candidacy for the presidency. it is the most important as it is the day that you will most probably get a lot of good media coverage plus it is the first time that you will be harnessing the strength of your followers. you want to use that day to fire up your supporters and with the help of media create momentum for your candidacy.

it is actually of communicating important messages to the public and your supporters. communication is the most important component of that day. unfortunately, your communication team failed you.

based on the PDI article that reported your announcement day, you were running on the platform based on  7Es, but it listed only 6Es, we wrote about  it here and we quite what we wrote:  (read more here: http://wp.me/snw03-2266):

he announced he is running on a platform of 7Es:

1. empowering
2. emancipating
3. educating the people
4. elevating living standards
5. eradicating bad governance
6. establishing peace in the land

oops, wait a minute – that was only 6 points! we wonder if the PDI reporter was an error here or was it bro. eddie who may have forgotten another word that starts with the letter “e”? now, we’re even more worried.

a reader of this blog made a comment, giving us the complete 7Es (same link, a reader with username “honey” http://wp.me/snw03-2266:

* Empower the Filipinos
* Emancipate the Filipinos
* Educate the Filipinos
* Elevate the standard of living
* Energize the economy
* Eradicate corruption
* Establish peace in the land

we had asked ” honey ” to give us the link where she got the 7Es, no reply yet.

the  list given to us by honey did not  match with what was published at PDI. these were not in the PDI article:

  •  “energize the economy”
  •  “eradicate corruption”

in the PDI article, it says “eradicating bad governance”, we wonder if this is supposed to be  “eradicate corruption” instead?

this is not just semantics, but bad governance is not the same as corruption. one is broader and includes the other.

publishing one missing E at the PDI it may have been an error by the writer of PDI, but given the other error, the different wordings, it looks like you communication  team is not doing its job properly.

the biggest incompetence of your communicati0n team is it did not prepare a press kit for distribution to the media. or if it did, it was badly done.

for such a big event, it is Communication 101 to prepare and distribute press kits to all media to make sure they get the message correctly and consistently. a PDI writer getting it wrong means the communication team did not prepare a press kit. writers ALWAYS  refer to the press kit for accuracy when they write their articles, they do not solely rely on what they hear during the event.

i did not listen to tour speech, so  it is possible you  forgot to mention the 7th E and said the wrong term on the other. the press kit would have given the reporter the correct words and number even if  you made an error in your speech. that is the value of the press kit and a competent communication team.

having the PDI article call it as “eradicate bad governance” to mean “eradicate corruption” is also another major Communication 101 incompetence. there are significant differences in the meanings of those terms. given the difference meanings, action steps or program actions are also different.

communicating the wrong message or being inconsistent in the messages is a most serious incompetence in communication. we appreciate your effort at articulating your philosophies or platform, we think that is what all candidates should do, but your communication team has done you harm.

bro. eddie, we think these are major infractions that should lead you to fire your communication team. get rid of them now when you are at the very start of your campaign, they might make more major errors in the future, the time when you need them the most.

yours truly,

~wawam~

    “bro. eddie, we think these are major infractions that should lead you to fire your communication team. get rid of them now when you are at the very start of your campaign, they might make more major errors in the future, the time when you need them the most.”

    Wow.. you sounded as if you don’t commit mistakes. Have you realized what impact this will make to the people you are asking to get fired? However important the mistake have been, I think they should learn from it and move on with their lives. It seems you’re the only one making a big deal out of this.

    • August 25, 2009 at 11:21 am

      if i was right and bro. eddie’s communication team did not prepare a press kit for the event, it means they do not know their jobs. the august 21 event is the most major event for the candidacy of bro. eddie – you strive to be perfect on that day, no less.

      their incompetence has cost bro. eddie’s campaign a lot of wasted time and effort. it is bro. eddie’s first major public appearance on his candidacy – it is a very major event.

      bro. eddie should hire and maintain only competent people. if he is unable to do this during his campaign, then he does not deserve to be president of this country.

      i have edited your comment. you need to grow up. if you can’t stop yourself from being silly, then stop making a comment here.

        Sorry for being silly. I just think being a good and competent President is not related how well he presented himself during the first time he announces his candidacy. They will be given enough time to present themselves and their platforms as soon as the actual campaign period starts.

        Until he formally files his candidacy, I think no one cares whatever press kit he has prepared.

        But then maybe I’m wrong.. this is just my opinion.

        • August 25, 2009 at 3:48 pm

          the press kit is supposed to contain a summary of the event, including the platform bro. eddie is using for his presidency.

          getting the wrong platform publicized by media on the most important event of bro. eddie’s presidential campaign is a big loss.

          just look at what happened – PDI, the largest selling national newspaper in the country, read by many hundreds of thousands of voters read the wrong platform that bro. eddie is running from.

            PDI did a poor job on publishing Bro Eddie’s platform. I mean, It could be that they were not paying attention during the event and ignored the fact the they published 6 pts instead of 7?

            I haven’t seen the event personally, but then I’m so sure when Bro Eddie discussed his platform he surely have mentioned all 7, if not, then he’s to blame and not his campaign team.

            With or without the kit, those who have intentions of publishing it should have noted whatever Bro Eddie announced.. So shouldn’t it be PDI’s fault that they published 6 instead of 7? if ever Bro Eddie really did forgot to mention all, shouldn’t the reporter ask what’s the other “E”? How could PDI publish it knowing it’s incomplete. EIC should have known that it was incomplete unless they simply ignored it. (Since its not that big of deal after all).

            Obviously the 7 E’s are available somewhere in the internet. They should have researched and published the correct one.

            • August 25, 2009 at 6:28 pm

              having a professional and competent communication team will address whatever weaknesses reporters of media have. that is the point – media can make mistakes and some of them can be incompetent as well and when they do make mistakes it is the candidates who get hurt, not media. that drives home the point of the importance of having a functioning, competent and professional communication team.

              here is an example of what a press kit can do – read the post on senator miriam defensor santiago’s privilege speech on government men’s ad spending.

              click here: https://2010presidentiables.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/10-gov%e2%80%99t-men-spent-p218m-for-%e2%80%98info-ads%e2%80%99-shoot-on-sight-says-senator-defensor-santiago/

              that article has lots of names and numbers but by the looks of it they are all good numbers. the reporter was able to report them accurately.

              like villanueva, miriam delivered a speech at the senate but i bet she released a press release or a press kit to the media that contains all the numbers, names and facts if not her whole speech.

              villanueva only had 7 points to say – PDI missed one and got another wrong. compare that to what PDI printed from miriam’s privilege speech – many more numbers and names but they got it right.

              that is the value of having a good, competent and professional communication team and what a press kit can do.

              villanueva needs to fire his communication team now or it will be too late.

              —-

              this episode on villanueva and miriam is an excellent example of what PR 101, Communication 101 and Marketing 101 is all about. i will be making these two episodes as a case study when i make my lectures on advertising and marketing. it’s an excellent contrast of what competence and incompetence is on these things.

              ~wawam~

                Ok. I see your point. I just don’t think you should fire the whole team. It’s just too much for my own opinion. Thanks for clarifying it though.

                And PDI is really owning up to their reputation being inaccurate. tsk tsk tsk.

                • August 25, 2009 at 9:21 pm

                  here is one more indication of what a good communication team can do. here is the link to a press release from miriam defensor santiago — what is there is the complete speech, including the facts and data she enumerated in her speech.

                  miriam’s communication team must have distributed hard copies of this speech to the press and posted it online within the same day.

                  the press kit miriam distributed is probably the reason how the reporters were able to publish the exact figures and data.

                  having the press kit is making sure the press gets it right and no opportunity lost. the error of bro. eddie’s communication team made has cost bro. eddie very precious media time.

                  i also can’t find in the internet exactly what are the 7Es of bro. eddie.

                  here is the link for the miriam’s press release: http://www.senate.gov.ph/press_release/2009/0824_santiago1.asp

                      with the link you gave, this whole thing about the 7Es platform of government becomes more suspicious and raises a few more questions.

                      the date of the posting in that link is June 19, 2009. i thought the 7Es is new?

                      why did that posting preempt the big announcement last august 21?

                      no idea. is it different from he’s platform 6 years ago? maybe it’s the same old thing.

                      fyi. the 7Es is actually not new. bro. eddie announced it at the araneta coliseum early in june, during the launching of bagong pilipinas, bagong pilipino movement. if i may add, it was also during this event that bro. eddie announced he was taking a leave of absence from his pastoral duties to concentrate in strengthening bangon pilipinas.

    If this is the case the error should be corrected on future plans.

    Yes they are all volunteers, and I think they’re not professionals too.

    But right now a lot of voters are not educated regarding this matter and certain steps and they are the majority. That some voters just rely on hearsays and tv ads. Something should be done about this.
    There should be a TV program that will study every single candidate, and even conduct a debate, for the people to watch. Cancel regular tv programmings for at least a certain timeslot or two where much ratings and statistics of people who watch daily are occupied.

    If the media doesn’t do anything to contribute on educating the voters other than showing tv ads that only show nothing more than jingles and slogans, they too have failed. Both the Television, Newspaper and the Internet media are now the most powerful tool one voter could rely on. The event on 2010 is very crucial because it will give a new turn for our country, i think the people should be educated and be prepared on their votes. And the media could give a huge help.

    maybe were not professional but still we know the truth.. Bro. Eddie insist with a great purpose in our country

    • August 27, 2009 at 9:00 pm

      in an election, its not enough to know the truth, running a professional and effective campaign is also needed.

      villanueva’s competitors ARE using professionals from advertising and PR agencies, villanueva’s team should match, in fact should be better than them to win.

    Bangon na!!!!!Bayang Pilipinas!Vote for rigteous leader…

    • October 17, 2009 at 1:42 pm

      Define righteous.

  12. November 14, 2009 at 9:17 am

    no one is righteous ,no one is right .but we are hoping and waiting for the righteous government.God bless the Philipines . i am for Bro.Eddie Villanueva .
